It is still technically winter here in Montana. My gardening fingers are itching to start planting but it really is too soon.
Instead I am indoors today making seed tapes and seed mats for my vegetable gardens and naturalized flower beds. I will plant these outdoors at the correct time for my Zone 3 location. Seed tapes and mats are great for many reasons. Here are a few:
Seeds stay in place when planting in rows or on slopes.
Making your own seed tapes and mats saves money.
Creating DIY seed tapes and mats is a fantastic project to do with the grandkids. By using recycled all natural paper towels or toilet paper to paste the seeds to you can educate the grandkids on the importance of using recycled materials in the gardens.
Making these DIY tapes and mats are an opportunity to practice seed conservation as this method uses much less seed than hand casting. You will have leftover seed to share and swap!
The instructions below are from www.instructables.com. Have fun!
